What is Pleurodesis
Pleurodesis is a medical procedure performed to eliminate the space between the lung and chest wall (pleural space). This helps prevent the recurrence of pleural effusion (fluid buildup around the lungs) or pneumothorax (collapsed lung).
During the procedure, a special chemical or medication is introduced into the pleural space, causing the lung and chest wall to stick together, preventing fluid or air from collecting again.
When Pleurodesis is Recommended
Pleurodesis is usually advised for patients who experience:
Recurrent pleural effusion due to conditions like cancer or infections
Repeated or persistent pneumothorax (collapsed lung)
Difficulty breathing caused by fluid buildup around the lungs
It is an effective solution for patients who need long-term relief from these recurring lung issues.
Benefits of Pleurodesis
Pleurodesis offers several important benefits:
Prevents repeated fluid buildup around the lungs
Reduces the risk of lung collapse recurrence
Improves breathing comfort and lung function
Minimizes the need for repeated draining procedures
Provides long-term relief and better quality of life
